Did you know that...
650 million girls and women alive today were married before turning 18, victims of child and adolescent marriage?
160 million is the number of children and adolescents in child labor worldwide?
70% of girls and women represent the victims of human trafficking for sexual exploitation?
25% of adolescents and young people, aged 15 to 24, have been victims of gender violence according to the World Health Organization?
1 in 3 children in Brazil is a VICTIM OF CHILD ABUSE, being sexually abused up to 18 years of age?
The consequences of that!!
Child and adolescent marriage: girls who marry in this situation are more likely to experience domestic violence and less likely to stay in school, increasing the risk of early and unplanned pregnancy, increasing, in turn, the risk of complications and maternal mortality, isolation from family and friends, and excluding them from participation in their communities, undermining their mental health and well-being.
Child labor: they are at risk of physical, mental and social harm, which compromises education, restricts their rights, limits their future opportunities, and leads to intergenerational vicious cycles of poverty and child labor - an increase of 8.4 million girls and boys in the last four years, from 2016 to 2020. In addition, according to a new report by the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), another 8.9 million are at risk of entering this situation by 2022 due to the impacts of Covid-19.
Sexual Exploitation: most of these victims are socially vulnerable and are attracted by false promises of work or study - sometimes even marriage, later being forced into sexual exploitation, forced and/or slave labor, servitude and organ, fabrics, and hair trafficking.
Child abuse: historically this already happens and most abusers, including sexual abusers, are close relatives, who live daily with the child and/or adolescents. But sexual violence against children, which can bring severe psychological consequences, hindering integral development, is happening everywhere, regardless of the economic status of the country.
